Starting out in photography – a beginners guide

Beginners photography Courses   Whenever I run a beginners photography course (I did one yesterday actually) I never fail to be amazed at how much a beginners photography can move forward when they are shown just a few fundamentals. Photography is really not that complicated a subject – many people like making it complicated (not for bad reasons I believe but because they enjoy the technical side of photography) and often new photographers sometimes feel they have to go through some pain in-order to become a real photographer but it really isn’t the case.   As I look forward to the second module of our beginners photography course that I am running today in St Albans I thought it would be nice to share just a…

Landscape photography course – Chelmsford, Essex

As the nights draw in and the days get shorter I cheered myself up by looking through some images taken this year on a landscape photography 1:1 course earlier in the year so thought I would share them. A 1:1 photography course is a great way of covering an enormous amount of content as a speed that works for you.  During the course of a day when can typically cover the content of both of our beginners modules and a bit more including some editing on Photoshop & Lightroom. here’s a few of the images:       The above images were all shop at the fabulous Royal Horticultural Society garden Hyde Hall, based just outside of Chelmsford in Essex.   1:1 photography days are…

Starting out in the world of photography – Beginners Photography Courses

Getting Off Auto What a day we had today for our beginners digital photography course in Chelmsford, Essex.  Finally after days of rain the sun came out and it felt like a proper weekend.  We had bought in all the essential supplies for a course – doughnuts, biscuits, tea, coffee and crisps whilst the delegates turned up keen and ready!  It doesn’t get better than that. We always quickly get into our introductions as starting out on a new course is always a nervous experience as delegates worry that they may be out of their depth or struggle with the content but we run our photography courses with really small class sizes and like to chat to delegates in advance to ensure everyone on the…

Becoming a professional commercial photographer

How to become a pro photographer I am often amazed when talking to new prospective photographers that they always seem to have the same vision in mind – to become a portrait and wedding photographer. Now there is nothing wrong with this as a concept however there are so many markets that a photographer can work in that sometimes the most obvious solutions get overlooked or not even considered. Commercial photography is not an obvious choice for many new snappers – often when I suggest it to my delegates they seem a little taken back and are not always that enthusiastic however the genre offers plenty of scope to help get you up and running and as the economy appears to be picking up the…

Stuck on Fully Automatic – time to move on!

Getting off fully automatic At this time of year we receive lots of calls from photographers with new cameras who are a little unsure about how to get the most from them.  Typically new owners can be a little intimidated by their new kits whilst other may have tried a few different settings and end up reverting back to fully automatic. It is a real waste, as modern digital cameras offer a whole world of creativity and the ability to catch wonderful images.  Fully automatic tends to have a number of pretty serious limitations including: (1) Focusing upon the nearest object detected (2) Firing the small top mounted flash resulting in horrible results (3) Limiting the features of the camera you can change for creative…

Cambridge digital photography courses for beginners

Digital photography courses in Cambridge for beginners Despite the bitterly cold weather another group of hardy wannabe photographers spent the weekend with me learning the skills and techniques to start capturing some great images. Working with small groups of only eight people ensures that we can teach and learn in a friendly and comfortable environment which everyone enjoys and has some fun. The group produced some absolutely stunning images during our time in Cambridge city centre and everyone left with a real sense of enthusiasm and enjoyment. I have put together a few images from the day here and a video slide show as well. We have been running our digital photography workshops in Cambridge for a couple of years now and the feedback has…

Taking great portraits – what could be better – Portrait photography

I consider being asked to take a portrait a great honour and also a great responsibility as I have to capture a moment in time and that is a one off opportunity. Having said that I also enjoy portrait photography as many as any other branch and I also love sharing that experience with others. During the course of the year we run a large number of portrait photography courses at Unshaken – these are both studio and lifestyle courses at some great locations including Chelmsford, Maidstone, Cambridge and St Albans. It is always a wonderful moment when a delegate starts to capture portraits beyond their expectations – it becomes nearly addictive and very often the hardest part of the day is reining in their…

Lifestyle Portrait Photography Course – Chelmsford, Essex

Lifestyle Portrait Photography Course Today we ran one of our popular lifestyle portrait photography courses from the stunning grounds of Hylands House in Chelmsford, Essex.  The overcast day was not enough to deter our brave band of photographers who captured our three stunning models in a range of locations and poses. [nggallery id=7] Our lifestyle portrait photography course is designed to help photographers develop portrait skills that can be applied outside on location. During the course of the day our photographers identified different lighting conditions and the means to control light to produce images with dynamic impact. Lifestyle portrait demand continues to grow and being able to shoot great portraits outside is a wonderful tool for both professional and amateur photographers.  If you would like…
